A Medium of Love

This photo conveys three things about me. First, I love nostalgia. This buffet and hutch belonged to my father and mother. After my father was killed in a plane crash, my mother gave these to me. They remind me of home. My wife and I have debated about selling these beautiful pieces. But, I just can’t do it. It’s home. Second, I love food. The scene has dinnerware my wife arranged, which remind me of a wonderful supper with my family. Third, this reminds me of the amazing food my wife makes for our family.

Lately, I have been shooting solely in manual mode and, as Bob Holmes say, “Expose for the highlights and let the shadows take care of themselves.” I have shot several hundred pictures to work on high-contrast exposures. It was evening, with the sun going down, and I saw both the shadows created by the hutch and the shadows created by the blinds in the window you cannot see. I composed the shot to get both the effects of the shutters and the effects of the hutch. My goal was to make you wish you were there, nostalgic about home, and hoping for a good supper!

I chose color because I loved the warm, golden light provided by the setting sun. It invites friends and family, not only into my wife’s and my home, but into my mother’s home, where food is medium of love.
